Privacy policy
Effective 6 September 2026
What Muse Rent collects about you, why, who else sees it, how long it is kept, and what you can ask us to do with it.
Information we collect
Account and profile information you give us: your name, email address, the neighbourhood or area you rent in, an optional avatar image, and anything you choose to write in your profile bio.
Booking and payment records: the listings you booked or listed, the dates, the prices and deposit amounts, and the identifiers our payment processor returns for each authorization, capture, refund and payout. Muse Rent never receives or stores your full card number — card details are entered directly into fields hosted by our payment processor.
Condition photos and notes: the photographs you and the other party upload at the handoff and at the return of a booking, and the free-text condition notes recorded alongside them.
Technical information generated by using the site: your session, the pages served to you, and server logs including IP address, kept for security and troubleshooting.
Business enquiries: if you use the enquiry form on our For Businesses page, we collect the name, business name, email address and message you submit. You do not need a Muse Rent account to send one, and we do not look for an existing account against the address you give us.
How we use it
To operate bookings: showing listings, taking booking requests, letting the two parties arrange a handoff and a return, and keeping both sides informed by email about what has happened to a booking.
To take payments: authorizing and capturing the rental fee, placing and releasing the security deposit hold, issuing refunds, and paying listers out.
For safety and trust: verifying email addresses, preventing fraud and abuse, and reviewing a condition problem when one is raised, using the photographs and notes from that booking.
To meet legal and tax obligations, and to keep the service working — debugging, monitoring, and protecting the platform against attack. We do not use your personal information for advertising, and we do not sell it.
To answer a business enquiry: what you submit through the For Businesses form is used solely to reply to you and to work out whether a partnership makes sense. It is not added to a marketing list, not used for advertising and not sold, exactly as above.
Who we share it with
Stripe, our payment processor. All card data is collected by and transmitted directly to Stripe, which processes payments, holds the deposit authorization, and pays listers out. Stripe handles that information as an independent controller under its own privacy policy, and Muse Rent receives back only the identifiers and status of each payment.
The other party to a booking. A lister and a renter necessarily see each other’s name, profile and the handoff details for a booking they have both agreed to, along with the condition photos uploaded against it.
Service providers that host and operate the platform for us — infrastructure, database, object storage and email delivery — under contracts limiting them to processing on our instructions.
Law enforcement or a regulator where we are legally required to disclose. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.
How long we keep it
Financial and booking records are retained for 7 years. That is the retention period Canadian tax law expects of records supporting a transaction, and it applies to bookings, prices, fees, payouts and refunds whether or not you still hold an account.
Condition photos are retained for as long as the booking record they evidence, because they are part of the record of that transaction.
Profile information is kept for as long as your account is open, and server logs are kept for a short operational period and then discarded. Where information is no longer needed and is not caught by the 7-year rule, it is deleted or anonymized.
A business enquiry is kept only while the conversation it started is live, and is deleted or anonymized once it is no longer needed. An enquiry is not a financial record and does not support a transaction, so the seven-year retention described above does not apply to it. Sending us an enquiry does not put your details on file for seven years.
Access, export and deletion
You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and we will provide an export of it in a portable format. You can also correct anything inaccurate from your profile page, or by asking us.
You can ask us to delete your account and the personal information attached to it. Deletion is subject to the 7 years of financial and booking record retention described above: records supporting a completed transaction are kept for that full period, and the rest of your profile is removed or anonymized. We will not promise an unconditional immediate erasure we are not permitted to carry out.
To make any of these requests, email support@muse-rent.com and tell us which one you want. That address reaches the person accountable at Muse Rent for the personal information described in this policy, and it is also where to send a question or a challenge about our handling of it. We will confirm your identity first, and we will respond within the timeframe PIPEDA requires. You may also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada if you are unsatisfied with how we handled it.
If you sent us a business enquiry and never created an account, these rights are still yours. Write to the same address from the one you enquired with and ask for a copy of your enquiry, a correction to it, or its deletion. There is no account to close first, and we will not ask you to create one in order to delete something you sent us.
Data breach notification
If we become aware of a breach of our security safeguards that creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we will notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada within 72 hours of becoming aware of it.
The notification will describe what happened, what information was involved, what we have done about it, and what you can do to reduce the risk to yourself. We keep a record of every such breach, whether or not it met the threshold for notification.
